Once the vision has been established, you know where you want to be. Taking a look around you, you can figure out where you are. Planning and executing the strategy to get you from where you are to where you want to be is the Mission.

This is much easier said than done, but it is doable.

So where are you? Do you have the skill, knowledge and desire to execute your plan? Do you have the resources available and aligned? Is your organization structured to support it? Does your compensation plan award the behaviors that move you closer to your vision? Do you have the feedback mechanisms in place to measure and monitor progress? Do you have the bench strength to carry out your plan over the long run?

These questions and others will help you figure out if your mission is SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reasonable and Time-Bounded.

A SMART Mission will move you closer to your ideal future state, your VISION.
